I started in construction in the 1980s. Vancouver looked different then. The West End had more trees. Yaletown had more warehouses. I learned to build houses first. I learned how walls work. I learned how roofs stay up. Then I started fixing things. People called me to fix doors. People called me to fix leaks. I never stopped.
Different Homes and Different Problems
Vancouver has many types of homes. I work in Kerrisdale. I work in the West End. I work in East Vancouver and Burnaby. Every area is different.
In the Westside and Kerrisdale, the houses are old. We call them heritage homes. These houses have character. They also have secrets. I open a wall in a Kerrisdale basement. I find knob and tube wiring. I find old pipes. I find sawdust insulation. These houses need care. You cannot rush a heritage home. You must respect the wood. You must respect the history.
I once worked on a house near UBC. The floor was tilted. The owner wanted new trim. I looked at the floor. I did not install the trim yet. I checked the crawlspace. I found a post. The post was rotten. The house was sinking. I told the owner. We fixed the post. Then we fixed the floor. Then I installed the trim. Lesson one is simple. Look deeper. Do not just fix the surface. Fix the cause.
In Yaletown and the West End, the homes are high. They are condos. Condos have different rules. You have a leak in a condo. You do not just fix it. You call the strata. You talk to the manager. You follow the bylaws. I fix many things in condos. I fix drywall cracks. I fix leaky faucets. I mount TVs on steel studs.
One time in a Westside condo, a pipe burst. The water went down five floors. The owner was at work. I arrived. I shut off the water. Then I started the fans. Then I cut the drywall. You must act fast with water. Water is the enemy of a home.
The Hidden Things
I have learned to listen to houses. A house makes noise. A floor squeaks in South Vancouver. A pipe bangs in North Vancouver. These noises mean something. A squeak means a loose nail. A bang means water hammer. Listen to your house. It tells you what it needs.
I see many DIY jobs. People try to fix things. They watch a video. They buy a tool. Then they make a mistake. I see backwards P-traps. I see tape on electrical wires. I see caulk covering mold. These mistakes cost money. They also cause danger.
I worked in Richmond once. A man tried to install a dishwasher. He forgot the clamp. He turned it on. He went to bed. He woke up in a lake. He called me at 6:00 AM. I arrived. I fixed the hose. I dried the floor. Then I installed the dishwasher right.
Use the right tools. Use the right parts. If you do not know, ask. If you cannot do it, call. It is cheaper to do it right once. It is expensive to do it wrong twice.
The Value of Time and Work

Do not hire that guy. Hire a professional. Look for a 5-star rating. Look for BBB accreditation. Look for WorkSafeBC coverage. These things matter. They protect you. They protect your home.
Lessons from the Bench
I have learned about people too. People are busy. People are tired. You have a job. You have a family. You do not want to spend your Saturday fixing a toilet. You do not want to spend your Sunday painting trim. You want to enjoy your home. You want to live your life.
That is why I do this. I take away the stress. I cross items off your list. I assemble the furniture. I hang the pictures. I fix the door that sticks. You come home. The work is done. The house is right. You can relax.
I remember a lady in East Vancouver. She was 80 years old. Her deck was rotting. She was afraid to walk on it. I went there. I replaced the boards. I reinforced the joists. I stained the wood. She walked out on the deck. She smiled. She felt safe again. That is the best part of my job. I make homes safe. I make homes work.
My Philosophy
My philosophy is simple. Done right. Every time. No shortcuts. No "good enough."
If I fix a hole in the drywall, you should not see it. If I install a faucet, it should not drip. If I mount a TV, it should be level. I use a level. I use a stud finder. I use my eyes.
I work in Yaletown condos with glass walls. I work in Main St houses with lath and plaster. I work in new builds in Burnaby. The house changes. The philosophy stays the same.
Do not wait for a small leak to become a flood. Do not wait for a small crack to become a hole. Fix things early. Maintain your home. Change your furnace filters. Clean your gutters. Check your smoke detectors. Replace your old caulk. These small steps save thousands of dollars.
