Hey there. Bifold doors look great in a bedroom or a pantry. They save space, then they start to act up. You pull the handle, then the door jumps. It scrapes the floor, then it gets stuck. These issues are common. Most people think they need new doors. You usually do not. You just need to adjust the hardware. Most fixes take ten minutes. You need a few tools, then you can fix it yourself. We provide home maintenance services across Vancouver. We see these doors in the West End, Yaletown, and Kerrisdale every day. Here is how you fix them.
Know Your Door Parts
You must know the parts before you fix them. Look at the top of the door. You see a metal track. Inside the track is a roller. The roller slides. Look at the corners. You see pivots. There is a top pivot, then there is a bottom pivot. The top pivot sits in a bracket. The bottom pivot sits in a floor bracket. Between the doors, you find hinges. In the middle of the top track, you find a snugger. The snugger is a small plastic piece with a spring. Every part must work together. If one part moves, then the whole door fails.
Tools You Need
Gather your tools first. You need a Phillips head screwdriver. You need a flat head screwdriver. You need a pair of pliers. Grab a flashlight. You might need a wrench. Keep a vacuum nearby. Get a damp cloth. Buy a can of silicone-based lubricant. Do not use WD-40 on tracks. It attracts dust, then it creates a mess.

The Door Scrapes the Floor
This is the most common call we get for home maintenance services. The door sags, then it rubs your carpet. It leaves marks on your hardwood. This happens because the bottom pivot shifted.
- Open the door.
- Look at the bottom corner near the wall.
- Locate the bottom pivot pin.
- Lift the door slightly, then pull the pin out of the bracket.
- Look at the bracket on the floor.
- Loosen the screw in the bracket.
- Slide the bracket away from the wall.
- Tighten the screw.
- Drop the pin back into the hole.
- Test the door.
If the door still rubs, then you must adjust the height.
- Locate the nut on the bottom pivot pin.
- Use your fingers or a wrench.
- Turn the nut clockwise, then the door rises.
- Turn it counter-clockwise, then the door lowers.
- Raise the door until it clears the floor.
- Ensure the top pivot stays in its socket.
The Door Popped Off the Track
Sometimes you pull the door, then the top corner jumps out. The door hangs by one pin. This is dangerous. It can fall, then it can hurt someone. This happens when the top pivot bracket is loose.
- Lift the door.
- Push the top pivot pin down.
- Slide the pin back into the top bracket.
- Check the screw on the top bracket.
- Use your screwdriver, then tighten it.
- If the bracket is broken, then buy a replacement kit.
- Look at the roller.
- Ensure the roller is inside the track groove.
- Close the door slowly.

The Doors Do Not Stay Closed
You close the doors, then they slowly slide back open. This is annoying. It happens because the snugger is out of place. The snugger is the plastic piece in the center of the track.
- Close the doors completely.
- See where the roller stops.
- Open the doors.
- Move the snugger to that exact spot.
- The snugger has a small spring.
- The roller should click into the spring.
- Test the tension.
- If the spring is missing, then buy a new snugger.
Large Gaps Between Panels
Look at your doors when they are closed. You might see a big gap in the middle. You might see the doors hitting each other. This is a horizontal alignment issue.
- Go to the top pivot bracket.
- Loosen the screw.
- Slide the bracket toward the center to close a gap.
- Slide the bracket toward the wall to fix overlapping doors.
- Tighten the screw.
- Repeat this on the bottom pivot bracket.
- Ensure the door is plumb.
- Use a level if you have one.

Sticking and Noisy Operation
Doors should slide silently. If they squeak, then they need maintenance. If they jump, then the track is dirty.
- Open the doors.
- Use your vacuum.
- Clean the inside of the top track.
- Remove all dust, then remove all hair.
- Use a damp cloth.
- Wipe the track until it is shiny.
- Spray a small amount of silicone lubricant on a rag.
- Wipe the inside of the track with the rag.
- Do not spray the track directly.
- Wipe the rollers.
Stripped Screw Holes
The wood on these doors is often soft. Screws pull out, then the door falls. You cannot just tighten the screw. The hole is too big.
- Remove the screw.
- Take a wooden toothpick or a golf tee.
- Dip it in wood glue.
- Jam it into the hole.
- Break off the excess.
- Let the glue dry.
- Drive the screw back into the hole.
- The wood expands, then the screw stays tight.
Broken Hinges
Look at the hinges between the door panels. They take a lot of stress. They bend, then they snap.
- Support the door panels.
- Unscrew the broken hinge.
- Take it to the hardware store.
- Match the size exactly.
- Buy new screws if the old ones are rusty.
- Install the new hinge.
- Ensure the doors fold flat.

Hardware Replacement Kits
If your rollers are flat or your pins are bent, then buy a kit. These kits cost about twenty dollars. They include the top pivot, bottom pivot, roller, and snugger.
- Remove the door.
- Pull out the old hardware with pliers.
- Tap the new hardware in with a hammer.
- Be gentle.
- Reinstall the door.
- Follow the adjustment steps above.
