Welcome. You bought a new TV. Now you need to mount it. Doing this alone is difficult. Walls in Vancouver vary. Condos often have metal studs. Older houses have wood studs. Some walls are concrete. Randall the Handyman handles these installations daily.
Select Your TV Mount
Choose a mount that fits your needs. There are three main types.
Fixed Mounts
Fixed mounts hold the TV flat. They sit close to the wall. This option provides a clean look. You cannot adjust the angle. Use this for eye-level viewing.
Tilt Mounts
Tilt mounts allow the TV to angle down. Use these if the TV sits high on a wall. This reduces glare. It helps with viewing from a bed or couch.
Full-Motion Mounts
Full-motion mounts use an arm. You pull the TV away from the wall. You turn the screen left or right. These mounts work for corner placements. They are heavy. They require strong wall attachments.

Identify Your Wall Type
Your wall material determines the hardware. Vancouver homes use different materials.
Wood Studs
Most houses use wood studs. Studs are usually 16 inches apart. We use lag bolts to secure the mount. The bolt goes into the center of the wood. This is a strong connection.
Metal Studs
Many Vancouver condos use metal studs. These are thin. Standard screws will not hold. We use toggle bolts. The bolt opens behind the metal. This creates a secure anchor. We find the stud, drill a hole, and then insert the toggle.
Concrete and Brick
Fireplaces and exterior walls are often concrete. We use masonry bits to drill. We insert plastic or metal anchors. Then, we drive screws into the anchors. This provides a permanent hold.

Manage Your Cables
Cables look messy when they hang. You have two options to hide them.
Surface Raceways
A raceway is a plastic track. It sticks to the wall. You put cables inside. You then snap the cover shut. You can paint the raceway to match your wall. This works well for concrete walls.
In-Wall Hiding
We can hide cables behind the drywall. We cut two small holes. One hole goes behind the TV. The second hole goes near the power outlet. We run the cables through the wall. We use brush plates to cover the holes. This creates a professional finish. Do not run power cords inside the wall. Use a power bridge kit for safety.

Mount Above a Fireplace
Mounting above a fireplace is common in Vancouver. It presents challenges. Heat can damage electronics. We check the temperature. We ensure the wall is not too hot. We also check for gas lines. We use specific anchors for the stone or tile.
