Welcome to your new home. Your Vancouver condo needs a TV setup. Mounting your TV saves space. It looks clean. It stays secure. Follow this guide to get it right.

Know Your Wall

Identify your wall material before you start. Most Vancouver condos use drywall. Walls in Yaletown or the West End often have steel studs. Older buildings in East Vancouver might have wood studs. Some modern towers use concrete.

Wood Studs

Wood studs are common in houses. You find them in Westside or South Vancouver residential areas. These studs are strong. Use lag bolts for these. Locate the center of the stud. Drill a pilot hole. Drive the bolt in. Your TV will not move.

Steel Studs

Steel studs are standard in newer condos. These are thin. They do not hold screws well. You must use toggle bolts. Drill through the steel. Insert the toggle. Tighten the bracket. This creates a secure grip. Do not use standard screws here.

Concrete and Brick

Some lofts on Main St have concrete walls. You need a masonry bit. Use a hammer drill. Insert concrete anchors. These expand to hold the weight. It is a slow process.

Choose Your Mount

Pick a bracket that fits your needs. There are three main types.

Fixed Mounts

These keep the TV flat against the wall. They are the most basic. Use these if your TV is at eye level. They do not move. These are the cheapest option.

Tilting Mounts

These allow the TV to angle down. Use these if you mount the TV high. They reduce glare from windows. Many condos in Richmond or North Vancouver have large windows. Tilting helps you see the screen better.

Full Motion Mounts

These have an arm. You can pull the TV out. You can turn it left or right. Use these for corner mounts. These are great for open-concept units in UBC or South Main St. They are the heaviest. They need the best wall anchors.

Gather Your Tools

You need specific tools for a tv mounting service.

  • Stud finder
  • Power drill
  • Drill bits
  • Level
  • Socket wrench
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Painters tape

Check your tool kit. Ensure your battery is charged.

Measure and Mark

Start with the height. Sit in your usual spot. Look at the wall. Mark your eye level. This is where the center of the screen should go. Use painters tape to mark the corners of the TV. Step back and look. Ensure it is not too high.

Use the stud finder. Move it across the wall. Mark every stud you find. Most studs are 16 inches apart. Check the marks twice. Use your level. Draw a straight line between the marks.

Drill the Holes

Hold the wall plate against your marks. Use the level again. Mark the hole locations. Put the plate down. Drill your pilot holes.

If you have steel studs in a Burnaby high-rise, use a metal bit. If you have concrete in West Vancouver, use the masonry bit. Keep the drill straight. Do not force the drill. Let the bit do the work.

Attach the Bracket

Pick up the wall plate. Line it up with the holes. Insert your bolts. If using toggle bolts, push them through the holes first. Tighten them by hand. Use the wrench to finish. Check the level one last time. If it is crooked, loosen the bolts and adjust.

Attach the mounting arms to the back of your TV. Lay the TV face down on a soft surface. Use a blanket. Find the VESA holes. These are the four threaded holes on the back. Use the screws that came with your mount. Do not over-tighten them.

Hang the TV

Ask for help. Do not lift a large TV alone. Lift the TV by the sides. Line up the arms with the wall plate. Hook them over the top. Lower the TV slowly. Listen for a click or feel it lock in place. Tighten the safety screws on the bottom. These prevent the TV from sliding off.

Hide the Wires

Cables look messy. Use plastic cord covers. These stick to the wall. You can paint them.

For a cleaner look, hide them inside the wall. Use a cable management kit. This requires cutting two holes in the drywall. One hole goes behind the TV. The other goes near the floor outlet. Feed the cables through. This is easier with wood or steel studs. Do not do this with concrete.

Common Mistakes

  • Mounting too high: This causes neck pain. Keep it at eye level.
  • Missing the stud: The TV will fall. Always use a stud finder.
  • Wrong anchors: Drywall anchors will fail. Use toggles for steel. Use lag bolts for wood.
  • Ignoring level: A crooked TV is distracting. Use a high-quality level.
