Welcome to the Randall The Handyman blog. You have a light switch. You flip it. It feels soft. There is no click. This is common. It is also a problem. A quiet switch is a broken switch. You need to fix it now. We provide home maintenance services to help.

The Problem with the Click

A light switch is a simple machine. It has a spring inside. This spring is made of metal. It has tension. When you flip the toggle, the spring snaps. This snap creates the clicking sound. The sound tells you the switch is working. The spring moves the electrical contacts. It moves them fast.

Over time, the spring wears out. Metal gets tired. It loses its snap. The switch feels mushy. It might stay in the middle. It might not stay up or down. If your switch does not click, the spring is gone. You cannot fix the spring. You must replace the whole switch.

The Fire Hazard

A non-clicking switch is dangerous. It is a fire hazard. When the spring is weak, the contacts move slowly. They do not snap together. They do not snap apart. Electricity wants to flow. It jumps across the small gap. This jump is an arc. Arcing creates extreme heat.

The heat melts the plastic switch body. It burns the wire insulation. It can start a fire inside your wall. You might smell smoke. You might see a brown mark on the wall plate. Do not wait for these signs. If the click is gone, the danger is there. Call a local handyman for East Vancouver repairs immediately.

Prepare for Replacement

You can do this job. It is a basic home maintenance task. You need a few tools. Get a flat-head screwdriver. Get a Phillips-head screwdriver. You need a non-contact voltage tester. You need needle-nose pliers. Buy a new switch. Buy a switch that matches your old one. Most home switches are single-pole switches. Some are three-way switches. Check how many toggles control the light. One toggle means a single-pole switch. Two toggles mean a three-way switch.

Turn Off the Power

Safety is first. Go to your electrical panel. This is often in the basement or a closet. Find the circuit breaker for the room. Flip the breaker to the OFF position. Go back to the switch. Flip it. The light should stay off. Use your voltage tester. Hold it near the switch. It should not beep. It should not light up. This means the power is off. You are safe to work.

Remove the Old Switch

Use the flat-head screwdriver. Remove the two screws on the wall plate. Take the plate off. Set it aside. Now use the Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the screws holding the switch to the box. These are at the top and bottom. Pull the switch out of the wall. Do not pull hard. The wires are attached.

Look at the wires. You will see a black wire. This is the hot wire. You might see a white wire. You will see a green or bare copper wire. This is the ground wire. Take a photo of the wires. This helps you remember where they go. Use your screwdriver to loosen the terminal screws. Pull the wires off the switch.

Inspect the Wires

Look at the ends of the wires. They should be clean. They should be shiny. If the ends are black, they are burnt. Cut the burnt part off. Use wire strippers. Remove half an inch of insulation. Make a new hook at the end of the wire. Use your needle-nose pliers to make the hook.

Install the New Switch

Get your new switch. Look for the word TOP on the metal frame. Hold the switch upright. Start with the ground wire. This is the green or bare wire. Place the hook around the green screw. Tighten the screw.

Now connect the other wires. For a single-pole switch, it does not matter which hot wire goes to which brass screw. Put the hook around the screw. Ensure the hook points clockwise. Tighten the screw. The wire should be snug. It should not move. Repeat for the second wire.

Put the Switch Back

Push the wires into the wall box. Do this gently. Fold them like an accordion. Place the switch against the box. Align the holes. Drive the mounting screws into the box. Do not over-tighten. The switch should be flush with the wall.

Put the wall plate back on. Drive the small screws in. Ensure the plate is straight. Your repair is almost done.

Test the Switch

Go back to the breaker panel. Flip the breaker to the ON position. Go to the room. Flip the switch. You should hear a sharp click. The light should turn on. Flip it again. The light should turn off. The switch should feel firm. It should stay in place. You have fixed the fire hazard.
