Welcome. Bifold doors are great for closets. They save space in small rooms. They look clean and modern. Sometimes they stop working. They jump off the track. They stick or sag. You do not need a new door. Most bifold issues are easy to fix. Grab your tools. Follow these steps. Get your door back on track.

Gather Your Tools

You need a few basic items. Check your toolbox. Gather a Phillips head screwdriver. Get a flathead screwdriver. Find a pair of pliers. Keep a vacuum or compressed air nearby. Get a clean rag. Have some silicone spray lubricant ready. You might need a flashlight to see inside the track.

Inspect the Top Track

Start at the top. The track is a metal rail. It guides the door panels. Dust accumulates here. Pet hair gets trapped. Small items can fall inside. These obstructions block the rollers. Open the door fully. Use your flashlight. Look for debris.

Take your vacuum. Use the narrow attachment. Suck out all the dirt. Use compressed air for tight corners. Take a damp rag. Wipe the inside of the track. Remove old grease or grime. Dry the track completely. Clean tracks allow smooth movement.

Check the Rollers and Pivots

Bifold doors use hardware to move. Look at the top of the door. You will see a guide wheel. This wheel sits in the track. You will also see a top pivot. This pin holds the door in place.

Press down on the guide wheel. It should be spring-loaded. It should bounce back up. If it is stuck, apply silicone spray. Wiggle it until it moves freely. Check the top pivot pin. Ensure it is seated in its bracket. If the pin is bent, replace it.

Tighten Loose Hardware

Loose screws cause most door failures. Look at the hinges. These connect the two door panels. Tighten every screw on the hinges. Use your Phillips head screwdriver. Do not over-tighten. You do not want to strip the wood.

Check the bottom pivot. This sits in a floor bracket. The bracket is often screwed into the door jamb. Look for movement. If the bracket wiggles, tighten the screws. Check the pivot pin in the bottom of the door. It might have a nut for height adjustment. Ensure it is secure.

Realignment Steps

Your door might be crooked. This happens over time. The door weight pulls the hardware. Look at the gap between the door and the wall. It should be even from top to bottom.

To adjust the horizontal position, find the top pivot bracket. It is inside the track. Look for a screw on the bracket. Loosen this screw slightly. Slide the bracket left or right. Move it until the door is straight. Tighten the screw.

Test the door movement. Open and close it. Check if it hits the frame. Adjust the bottom bracket if needed. Some bottom brackets have slots. Loosen the screw and slide the bracket to match the top position.

Adjusting Door Height

Is your door rubbing on the floor? Is it catching on the carpet? You need to raise the door. Go to the bottom pivot pin. Many pins have a threaded base.

Lift the door slightly. Turn the pivot pin clockwise to raise the door. Turn it counter-clockwise to lower the door. Adjust it until the door clears the floor. Ensure the top guide wheel still sits deep in the track.

Fixing a Worn Track

Sometimes the metal track is the problem. Heavy use can bend the track edges. Look for wide spots in the rail. Use your pliers. Gently squeeze the track walls back into place. Be careful not to crimp the metal.

If the track is severely damaged, replace it. Remove the screws holding the track to the header. Take the track to a hardware store. Buy a matching length. Screw the new track into the same holes. Use longer screws if the wood is soft.

Advanced Hardware Repairs

Some doors use plastic pivots. These can crack or snap. If a pivot is broken, pull it out of the door. You may need pliers to tug it. Take the broken part to the store. Bifold hardware comes in different sizes. Buy a matching kit.

Tap the new pivot into the hole. Use a hammer lightly. Do not crack the door wood. If the hole in the door is too big, the wood might be stripped. Fill the hole with wood glue and toothpicks. Let it dry. Drill a small pilot hole. Insert the new hardware.

Maintaining Smooth Operation

Once the door is on the track, keep it there. Use silicone spray. Apply a small amount to the top track. Apply it to the pivot pins. Do not use heavy grease. Grease attracts dust. Dust creates clogs.

Wipe away excess spray. Move the door back and forth. You should feel less resistance. Perform this cleaning once a year. It prevents the door from jumping the track again.
